IT: antiligula

FR: antiligule

IT: antiligula

In most species of grass the ligule is found at the junction of the sheath and the leaf blade and is a short whitish membrane. In Melica uniflora, however, the position of the ligule is rotated by 180° and it is therefore called antiligule. In this species, it forms a greenish-white spur, up to 4mm long, located on the side of the stalk facing away from the leaf blade. Melica uniflora is the only native grass species with an antiligule.

IT: resta

  • Länge: Absolut (in mm bzw.

  • Forma: lineare, ritorta, ginocchiata, piumosa
  • Inserzione: apicale, dorsale, basale

Awn is the term for a 3 mm to 30 cm long, usually relatively stiff bristle, which occurs in some grass species at the top or on the back or at the base of the lemma. In some species (e.g. Hordeum murinum) the glumes are also awned. In the Awnless or Hungarian Brome (Bromus inermis) the fact that it is one of the few native Bromus species which has no or only short awns has found its way into the name. If the lemma or glume has only a very short awn, less than 2 mm long, it is called mucronate but not aristate (awned).

Of particular relevance for identification is the awn of the lemma, mainly taking the following aspects into account:

  • Length: absolute (in mm - or particularly in the Feather-grass species (Stipa spp) in cm.) or relative to the associated glume (shorter, 1-3 times as long, etc.).
  • Shape: Straight, undulated, geniculated, feathery
  • Point of attachment: At the top (top awn), on the back (back awn) or at the base of the lemma.

With significantly geniculate and/or very long awns a distinction is sometimes made between the lower and the upper part of the awn. With Feather-grass (Stipa pennata), for example, the lower part of the awn is helically twisted, while the upper part is feathery.

It can be assumed that the awn corresponds morphologically to the leaf blade, while the associated lemma or glume corresponds to the leaf sheath.

In the true grasses (Poaceae) the main axis of the inflorescence is often called the "rachis". The term rachis is used in all types of inflorescences, namely in panicles, racemes, false spikes, true spikes and subdigitate inflorescences. In true digitate inflorescences, the main axis of the inflorescence is compressed to a point, as in the case of Bermuda-grass (Cynodon dactylon).

Blattgrund leaf base, leaf collar, junction of the sheath and blade Base du limbe (de la feuille), jonction "gaine-limbe" base fogliare

In alcune specie (es.

IT: base fogliare

The leaf base or blade junction refers to the narrow strip between the leaf sheath and leaf blade, which in the true grasses (Poacea) - unlike the sedges (Cyperaceae) - is characterised by a special tissue which differs from that of the sheath and blade. The leaf base is usually much brighter than the sheath and the blade; sometimes it may also have a striking red colour.

For identification purposes it is particularly important to determine whether the leaf base has prominent auricles (Lolium multiflorum, Festuca gigantea), i.e. pincer-like appendages protruding more or less horizontally, and partially or completely embracing the shoot.

In some species the leaf base is also conspicuously hairy -  e.g. with long cilia (lashes) (Elymus hispidus) or with hairy tufts instead of auricles (Anthoxanthum odoratum) - or strikingly wavy (Festuca altissima).

The outer side of the leaf base, i.e. the side facing away from the stalk, may have features relevant for identification, such as a conspicuous fringe of hair (e.g. Calamagrostis varia); however, this feature is not very stable in different species.

In some species (Phleum spp.the leaf base meets the stalk asymmetrically, i.e. one side is higher up than the other.

In some types of grass, the edges of the leaf blades are strikingly crimped. This is the case e.g.in Echinochloa crus-galli. Wavy leaf margins occur when the young leaf blade, during its first phase of development, which takes place within the leaf sheath of the next older leaf, cannot slide completely smoothly and unimpededly upwards along the stalk; this obviously occurs more commonly in some species than in others.

  1. Colore: rosso acceso (ad esempio in Echinichloa crus-galli) o trasparente (=ialino; ad esempio in Sesleria caerulea)
  2. Pelosità: ciliata (ad esempio in Bromus erectus, vedi Foto)
  4. Consistenza: cartilaginea, contemporaneamente trasperente (=ialino; ad esempio in Sesleria caerulea)

In most species the leaf margin is inconspicuous, i.e. more or less similar to the rest of the leaf blade. In some species, however, it differs with respect to

  1. colour: strikingly red (e.g. Echinichloa crus-galli) or strikingly bright (= hyaline, e.g.Sesleria caerulea)
  2. hairiness: regularly ciliated (like a comb) (e.g. Bromus erectus, see photo)
