Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria sanguinalis). Al contrario, nelle infiorescenze digitate, tutti i rami laterali sono inseriti nello stesso punto dell’asse principale (es. Cynodon dactylon).

A subdigitate inflorescence is a compound flower-head consisting of several more or less equal spike-like branches. In subdigitate inflorescences the secondary branches originate from different points of the rachis, (e.g. Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria sanguinalis), whereas in digitate inflorescences they originate from the very same point (e.g. Cynodon dactylon).

Starting from original panicle, the genesis of subdigitate inflorescences could be explained as follows: (1) loss of third-order branches (→ double raceme); (2) contraction of second-order branches (→ subdigitate); (3) compression of the main axis (→ digitate).
