In the field it is easy to see that different grass species grow in different ways: some form compact tussocks, while others grow in loose swards, and annuals form loose clusters. Grasses normally only at the lowermost nodes, located in or close to the surface of the soil (rare exceptions are e.g. Calamagrostis canescens, Echinochloa crus-galli). Depending on whether upright or prostrate side-shoots are formed, compact tussocks develop (with a diameter of 10 cm to 1 m), or loose to dense swards. Ruderal annuals usually form loose clusters, i.e. several flowering stalks grow outward from the rooting spot. Above-ground runners are also called stolons, while below-ground runners are termed rhizomes. In some species, such as Phleum pratense, the growth form varies according to the land use: tussock-forming in hay meadows and sward-forming in pastures.
The following growth forms are distinguished:

Blütchen | floret | Fleur (des graminées) | fiore |
EN: floret FR: fleur (des graminées) IT: fiore

Un singolo fiore normalmente comprende i seguenti elementi:
DE: Blütchen FR: fleur (des graminées) IT: fiore With the true grasses (Poaceae), a single flower is usually referred to as "floret". Each floret, i.e. each individual flower, is located in the axil of a supporting or covering leaf, which is referred to in the true grasses as a lemma. The florets are arranged in spikelets (= partial inflorescence), which are surrounded at the base by usually two glumes. All spikelets together form the inflorescence (= total inflorescence). The true grasses are wind-pollinated. In order for the wind to reach the three anthers and two stigmas as freely as possible, the florets have become greatly simplified in the course of evolution. A single grass floret now usually consists of only the following items:
Originally, each floret - in addition to the lemma - consisted of 15 elements, which were arranged in 5 circles, each consisting of three elements. One of the two circles, each with 3 anthers, has now completely disappeared in most grass species (except for rice and many bamboo species) and the other circles often consist of only two elements (2 lodiculae) or only one element (a palea formed of two fused tepals and therefore having two keels). The floral formula of today's grass is therefore no longer P3+3 A3+3 G(3) but P(2) + 2 A3 G(3). Photo. The photo shows two spikelets, each with two florets of Tall Oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius). With Tall Oat-grass, each spikelet consists of a male and a hermaphrodite floret. The lemma of the male floret is awned, while that of the hermaphrodite floret is awnless. The two transparent lamina in the center of the spikelet are the paleas. The stamens with purple anthers and the feathery-white stigmas can be clearly seen. |

Leaf blades are called Tor-grass-like when their shape is similar to those of Tor-grass (Brachypodium pinnatum). The leaf blade of Tor-grass is clearly lanceolate, meaning that the blade is broadest in the middle and tapers not only towards the tip but also towards the base. |

DE: Blatt FR: feuille IT: foglia In the true grasses (Poaceae) each leaf consists of (1) the leaf sheath, (2) the leaf base (sheath junction) with the ligule and (3) the leaf blade, colloquially referred to as the leaf.
The leaves always grow individually at the nodes of new shoots or fully developed stalks. In the true grasses they are always double-rowed (secunded) and positioned alternately on opposite sides of the stalk (in the sedges they are always arranged in three rows).
The leaf sheath refers to that portion of the leaf between the node and the leaf base. The leaf sheath surrounds the shoot, while the leaf blade protrudes from it. The junction between the leaf sheath and leaf blade, which is usually also differs in colour from the rest of the leaf, is called the leaf base or the sheath junction. Colloquially the term leaf mostly refers only to the leaf blade protruding from the stalk.

DE: Ährchen FR: épillet IT: spighetta The spikelet is the basic unit of inflorescence in the grasses (Poaceae). The spikelets lie at the end of each branch of the inflorescence. The final order branch represents the axis of the spikelet (rachis). Structure of the spikelet: each spikelet includes one to several florets (one- to many-flowered). The bract is enclosed by two bracts respectively named lemma and palea. The spikelets are enclosed by a lower and upper glume. Spikelets are arranged along the main and secondary axes (rachises) into a flowering head (inflorescence). Number of florets in each spikelet: in evolutionary terms the many-flowered spikelet is considered to be the original form. In the course of evolution the original many-flowered spikelets were reduced to two-flowered or one-flowered spikelets. In many species spikelets contain not only fertile but also sterile or stunted florets usually consisting of only a lemma. E.g. native species of Melica genus usually comprise 1-2 lower fertile florets and 2-3 upper club-like sterile florets. If the lowermost floret is sterile, its lemma is often interpreted as an additional glume. Even if in certain species the number of florets may vary, it is generally stable:

DE: Ähre FR: épi IT: spiga A spike is an inflorescence where all the spikelets are sessile, that is, directly attached to the main axis (rachis). In accordance with the typical branching scheme of the Poaceae, the spikelets are usually arranged alternately and on opposite sides of the axis (distichous). In the case of Nardus, they seem to be arranged on one side only (secund): it is assumed that they rotated through 180° in the course of evolution. When the spikelets have a shorter or longer stalk (pedicel), the inflorescence is called a raceme. In general the wide side of the spikelets faces the axis (e.g. Elymus repens). In the genus Lolium, however, the narrow side faces the axis, fitting into a small indentation. In the species of this genus only one glume is retained, except for the terminal spikelet. Genesis: starting from the original panicle inflorescence, the evolution of the spikelet can be explained as follows: (1) loss of tertiary branches (→ double raceme); (2) loss of secondary branches (→ raceme); loss of primary branches (→ spike). |

Scales in the true grasses refer to all the leaf-like elements in the inflorescence. We distinguish between the glume, lemma and palea. Photo: The photo shows two spikelets of Nodding Melick (Melica nutans). The two glumes of the spikelet are burgundy red scales, whlle the lemmas of the two fertile florets are green. In the lower left-hand floret the whitish-green palea can be seen, which is slightly shorter than the lemma. The white club-like structure in the middle of the spikelet is a stunted, sterile floret.
Glume: The glumes are located at the base of the spikelet and enclose it. They are usually awnless (exceptions: e.g. some Phleum species and Hordeum murinum).
Lemmas: Lemmas in the true grasses (Poaceae) refer to the bract of each floret. In many grass species the lemmas are awned, meaning that they bear a bristly arista, 3 mm to 30 cm long, originating at the tip or on the back of the lemma. Palea: In each floret a double-keeled palea originates opposite and slightly above the one-keeled lemma. The lemma and palea together enclose the stamens and the ovaries. |

Tramlines are located in the centre of an otherwise smooth leaf blade. Leaf blades with conspicuous tramlines are found in nearly all Poa species, for example, as well as in Sesleria caerulea, Helictotrichon pubescens and Glyceria notata. |
