Spreitengelenk | sheath junction, joint between leaf-sheath and blade | Jonction gaine-limbe, base du limbe | giunzione della guaina |
EN: sheath junction FR: jonction gaine-limbe IT: giunzione della guaina
EN: sheath junction DE: Spreitengelenk IT: giunzione della guaina

The leaf base, i.e. the transition from leaf blad to sheat, is also called the sheath junction. It is frequently much lighter in colour than either the sheath or leaf blade and consists of a different type of tissue. |

Sitzdrüsen | sessile crateriform glands along the leaf-margins | Glandes sessiles, papilles glandulaires | ghiandole sessili lungo il margine fogliare |
EN: sessile crateriform glands FR: glandes sessiles IT: ghiandole sessili

|
EN: sessile crateriform glands DE: Sitzdrüsen FR: glandes sessiles

Sessile crateriform glands are very short glandular hairs. Glandular hairs exude secretions and therefore often have small, shiny and often sticky globular drops at their tip. Among the native grasses this trait is very rare, even though it is not uncommon in other plants. Small Love-grass (Eragrostis minor) is one of the few grasses in which the edges of the leaf blade are regularly studded with conspicuous sessile crateriform glands. |

Haarkranz, Ligula | fringe of hair, ring of hair, ligule | Couronne de poils, ligule de poils | frangia (corona) di peli, ligula di peli |
EN: fringe of hair (ligule) FR: couronne de poils (ligule) IT: corona di peli (ligula)

DE: Haarkranz, Ligula FR: couronne de poils (ligule) IT: corona di peli (ligula)
Some species, such as the Common Reed (Phragmites australis) have a fringe of hair instead of the ligule at the junction between the leaf sheath and the upper side of the leaf blade. The fringe of hair can be interpreted as a very short ligule with long cilia on the edge. It is an extension of the inner epidermis of the leaf sheath and prevents dirt and water from penetrating into the leaf sheath. It also protects the culm from mechanical damage that could be caused by movement of the leaf blade in the wind. A fringe of hair instead of a ligule is relatively rare in grasses, so it is a relatively important feature for identification. Like the ligule, the fringe of hair varies in length from species to species. In the Common Reed the relatively short fringe of hair may sometimes include some very long individual hairs. |

EN: loosely clustered annual DE: Büscheliger Wuchs IT: forme annuali a culmi fascicolati

The term loosely clustered annual is used to describe the typical growth form of annual ruderal grasses, i.e. several prostrate or ascending flower stalks spreading out from one rooting point. |

Swards form when the side-shoots do not develop directly next to the mother plant, but at some distance from it. The side-shoots are connected to the mother plant by long or short runners. Sparse or spaced swards form if the runners are long, while dense ones develop if the runners are short. |

|
DE: Wuchsform FR: forme de croissance IT: forma di crescita
In the field it is easy to see that different grass species grow in different ways: some form compact tussocks, while others grow in loose swards, and annuals form loose clusters. Grasses normally only at the lowermost nodes, located in or close to the surface of the soil (rare exceptions are e.g. Calamagrostis canescens, Echinochloa crus-galli). Depending on whether upright or prostrate side-shoots are formed, compact tussocks develop (with a diameter of 10 cm to 1 m), or loose to dense swards. Ruderal annuals usually form loose clusters, i.e. several flowering stalks grow outward from the rooting spot. Above-ground runners are also called stolons, while below-ground runners are termed rhizomes. In some species, such as Phleum pratense, the growth form varies according to the land use: tussock-forming in hay meadows and sward-forming in pastures.
The following growth forms are distinguished:

Blatt | leaf, leaf-blade | Feuille | foglia, lamina fogliare |

DE: Blatt FR: feuille IT: foglia In the true grasses (Poaceae) each leaf consists of (1) the leaf sheath, (2) the leaf base (sheath junction) with the ligule and (3) the leaf blade, colloquially referred to as the leaf.
The leaves always grow individually at the nodes of new shoots or fully developed stalks. In the true grasses they are always double-rowed (secunded) and positioned alternately on opposite sides of the stalk (in the sedges they are always arranged in three rows).
The leaf sheath refers to that portion of the leaf between the node and the leaf base. The leaf sheath surrounds the shoot, while the leaf blade protrudes from it. The junction between the leaf sheath and leaf blade, which is usually also differs in colour from the rest of the leaf, is called the leaf base or the sheath junction. Colloquially the term leaf mostly refers only to the leaf blade protruding from the stalk.
