EN: smooth spike-like panicle DE: Nicht-lappige Scheinähre FR: panicule spiciforme continue

DE: Nicht-lappige Scheinähre FR: panicule spiciforme continue IT: pannocchia spiciforme continua
On spike-like panicles the side branches can be clearly recognised, despite substantial compression, which is not the case with true spikes. However, if the first-order branches are completely fused with the main rachis, spike-like panicles appear smooth (e.g. Phleum pratense) when bent over, i.e. without protruding lobate side branches, as in Phleum hirsutum. |

Wart-hairs are mostly relatively long and grow out of tiny wart-like bumps, i. e. they do not grow like "normal" hairs directly on the leaf blade or leaf sheath. Wart-hairs are mainly found in ruderal grasses such as Echinochloa crus-galli oder Panicum capillare. |

EN: hairiness of leaf blade FR: pilosité du limbe foliaire IT: pelosità della lamina fogliare

Alcune specie avventizie, come Echinochloa crus-galli o Panicum capillare, ergono i peli su piccole protuberanze o papille, vengono definite a pelosità “verrucosa”.

DE: Behaarung der Blattspreite FR: pilosité du limbe foliaire IT: pelosità della lamina fogliare The leaf blade is - like the leaf sheath - often densely or sparsely hairy. Usually only the upper side of the blade is hairy. Whether this is the case or not can be seen best when the leaf blade is laid over a finger and held up against the light. In relatively few species the leaf blades are hairy both on the top and underneath (e.g. Bromus tectorum, Hordeum murinun, Trisetum flavescens). The hairiness can be dense or sparse, and the hairs themselves may be short or long and straight or curly. The combination of dense, long and frizzy is referred to as "woolly" (e.g. Holcus lanatus), while the combination of sparse, long and straight is called "ciliate" or "fringed", and the combination of dense and short is known as "velvety" (e.g. Bromus tectorum); velvety hair cover is often hardly visible but always clearly perceptible to the touch. The hairs of some ruderal grasses, such as Echinochloa crus-galli or Panicum capillare, stand up on small hillocks or warts and are therefore referred to as "wart hair". Important

pH Boden | pH soil | pH du sol | pH del suolo |
EN: pH soil FR: pH du sol IT: pH del suolo
In sauren Böden liegt Stickstoff z.

DE: pH Boden FR: pH du sol IT: pH del suolo
The pH value of the soil influences the (biological) availability of various macro- and micronutrients, and thus the growth of plants. In acidic soils, nitrogen, for example, is present as ammonia, whereas in alkaline soils it occurs in the form of nitrate. Due to the permeability of their root membranes, many plants can absorb nitrogen either only as nitrate or only as ammonia. When pH values are low, some ions, such as aluminium or manganese, can reach concentrations which are toxic for many plant species. Many plant species grow only on calcareous or acidic soils. Mat grass (Nardus stricta), Wavy-Hair grass (Avenella flexuosa) and Rock Bent (Agrostis rupestris) are clear indicators of acidity, while Blue Moor grass (Sesleria caerulea), Distichous oat grass (Trisetum distichophyllum) and Alpine Bent (Agrostis alpina) are clear indicators of calcareous soils. The pH value of the soil is particularly dependent on the bed rock. If the bedrock is rich in bases, as in the case of limestone, dolomite, marl or shale, base-rich and usually calcareous soils develop. If the bedrock is silicate, as in the case of granite, gneiss or sandstone, the soil that develops is acidic and poor in bases. On peat bogs the soils are also acidic, and even if the bedrock is calcareous, the rain may leach the chalk out of the topsoil over time. |

Knospenlage, jüngstes Blatt | vernation, youngest leaf inrolled? | Préfoliaison, vernation | prefogliazione, vernazione |
EN: vernation FR: préfoliaison IT: prefogliazione
EN: vernation DE: Knospenlage IT: prefogliazione
DE: Knospenlage, jüngstes Blatt FR: préfoliaison IT: prefogliazione
Vernation is the term for the way the youngest leaf is packaged. Along the longitudinal axis the youngest leaf can either be folded or inrolled. If the youngest leaf is folded, the base of the shoot is usually flattened, the leaf blade is keeled up to the very tip and the keel runs exactly up the middle of the leaf blade (Dactylis spp., Glyceria spp.). When the culm develops, the erroneous impression may arise that the youngest leaf is inrolled in species such as Lolium perenne, Bromus erectus, Cynosurus cristatus. If the youngest leaf is inrolled, the base of the shoot has a round cross section and the leaf blade is unkeeled, or the keel is not exactly in the middle of blade and does not quite reach the tip. |

Traube (einfache Traube) | raceme | Grappe, racème | racemo |
EN: raceme FR: grappe IT: racemo
EN: raceme DE: Traube IT: racemo
DE: Traube FR: grappe IT: racemo
A simple raceme refers to a relatively loose inflorescence, where the spikelets are located on first order side branches. In contrast to true panicles or double racemes, the first order branches in simple racemes are unbranched. It is assumed that simple racemes developed from the panicle through loss of the 2nd and 3rd order branches. |

Doppeltraube | double raceme, dibotryum | Grappe double (~ panicule) | racemo composto |
EN: double raceme FR: grappe double (~ panicule) IT: racemo composto
EN: double raceme DE: Doppeltraube IT: racemo composto |
EN: double raceme DE: Doppeltraube FR: grappe double (~ panicule)
DE: Doppeltraube FR: grappe double (~ panicule) IT: racemo composto
Double racemes differ from true panicles in that they are less highly branched, i.e. there are only lateral branches of the 1st and 2nd order. Double racemes are, however - at least during the flowering season - similarly light and fluffy as the real panicles, with at least lateral branches of the 3rd order. It is believed that the double raceme arose through elimination of the 3rd order branches from the true panicle, which is considered to be the original type of grass inflorescence.
