Deckspelze | lemma | Glumelle extérieure, glumelle inférieure, lemme | lemma, glumetta inferiore |
EN: lemma FR: glumelle extérieure IT: lemma

In alcune specie (esempio: Melica ciliata, Achnatherum calamagrostis) i lemmi presentano in margine lungamente ciliato (4 mm). |
DE: Deckspelze FR: glumelle extérieure IT: lemma
In the context of true grasses (Poaceae) the term lemma refers to the bract (carrier or covering leaf) which is found underneath each flower. In grasses, the flowers are generally referred to as florets. In contrast to the 2-keeled, mostly inconspicuous and delicate paleas, lemmas are usually relatively coarse and also have a more or less long awn originating from the tip or the back. It is assumed that the lemma and awn are homologous to the leaf sheath and the blade respectively. Lemmas can be very diverse. In some species (e.g. Melica ciliata, Achnatherum calamagrostis) the lemmas on the lateral veins have cilia measuring up to 4 mm in length. In Setaria pumila the lemma has a cartilage-like consistency and is conspicuously cross-wrinkled. Together with the palea, the lemma envelopes three stamens and the ovary with two stigmas.
In most grass species several florets together form one partial inflorescence, known as a spikelet, which is enclosed at the base by usually 2 glumes. All the spikelets together form the total inflorescence.
Photo: The photo shows several spikelets of Silky-spike Melick (Melica ciliata). In the foreground one of the two reddish-translucent but glabrous (hairless) glumes can be seen; in the background the lemma with long cilia is visible.

In the literature, the following types of inflorescence are distinguished:
In grasses there are many transitional forms between the types of inflorescence described above, as well as numerous other modifications. Clear assignment of an individual grass species to a given inflorescence type is often not possible. For this reason, the inflorescence types described above are often grouped into the following main types for practical purposes, but even then allocation is frequently a matter of judgment:

Un singolo fiore normalmente comprende i seguenti elementi:
DE: Blütchen FR: fleur (des graminées) IT: fiore With the true grasses (Poaceae), a single flower is usually referred to as "floret". Each floret, i.e. each individual flower, is located in the axil of a supporting or covering leaf, which is referred to in the true grasses as a lemma. The florets are arranged in spikelets (= partial inflorescence), which are surrounded at the base by usually two glumes. All spikelets together form the inflorescence (= total inflorescence). The true grasses are wind-pollinated. In order for the wind to reach the three anthers and two stigmas as freely as possible, the florets have become greatly simplified in the course of evolution. A single grass floret now usually consists of only the following items:
Originally, each floret - in addition to the lemma - consisted of 15 elements, which were arranged in 5 circles, each consisting of three elements. One of the two circles, each with 3 anthers, has now completely disappeared in most grass species (except for rice and many bamboo species) and the other circles often consist of only two elements (2 lodiculae) or only one element (a palea formed of two fused tepals and therefore having two keels). The floral formula of today's grass is therefore no longer P3+3 A3+3 G(3) but P(2) + 2 A3 G(3). Photo. The photo shows two spikelets, each with two florets of Tall Oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius). With Tall Oat-grass, each spikelet consists of a male and a hermaphrodite floret. The lemma of the male floret is awned, while that of the hermaphrodite floret is awnless. The two transparent lamina in the center of the spikelet are the paleas. The stamens with purple anthers and the feathery-white stigmas can be clearly seen. |

Blattscheide, Scheide | sheath, leaf-sheath | Gaine, gaine foliaire | guaina, guaina fogliare |
EN: leaf-sheath FR: gaine foliaire IT: guaina fogliare

Infine, in alcune specie (es. |
DE: Blattscheide, Scheide FR: gaine foliaire IT: guaina fogliare The leaf sheath or sheath is the term for the part of the leaf which surrounds the stalk, while the leaf blade itself protrudes from the shoot. The leaf consists of the leaf blade and the leaf sheath.
The leaf sheaths, especially the lowermost ones, are an important feature for identification. In almost all grasses the leaf sheath is open along its entire length. In relatively few species - e.g. Bromus, Glyceria, Helictotrichon, Melica, Sesleria - it remains permanently fused over almost its entire length. In some species (e.g. Poa spp., Dactylis glomerata), the sheath is initially fused by a thin membrane, but this soon tears open as the stalk develops. Often leaf sheaths - particularly the lowermost ones - are conspicuously coloured (e.g. purple veins on a white ground in Holcus lanatus, bright red-purple in Lolium multiflorum) or strikingly hairy on the surface (Trisetum flavescens, Bromus erectus) or also only on the edges (Achnatherum calamagrostis, Setaria viridis).
In a few species the leaf sheaths have cross-veins, i.e. dark lateral connections between the longitudinal veins that are clearly visible in transmitted light (e.g. in Phalaris arundinacea, Festuca arundinacea, Glyceria fluitans). In some species the sheaths of the uppermost leaves are conspicuously inflated (e.g. Phleum spp.). In most species, however, the sheaths fit closely around the stalk even in the uppermost leaves.
Usually the basal leaf sheaths disappear quickly. In tuft-forming species they may remain for a longer time, in which case either a straw tunic or a fibre tuft is formed. If the basal leaf sheaths weather with hardly any disintegration a straw tunic forms e.g. in Poa alpina. Where only the veins remain, a dense fibre tuft develops, as in Koeleria vallesiana.
In the cross section, the sheaths are more or less round in most grass species. Some grasses have sheaths that are noticeably flattened (e.g. Dactylis glomerata) - at least as long as the stalk is not yet fully developed. Flattened leaf sheaths are found particularly - but not exclusively - in species with a folded vernation (the youngest leaf is folded instead of inrolled). In some species the leaf sheath is conspicuously keeled, and Melica nutans has a winged keel, i.e. the keel has a projecting strip of skin.
In some Festuca species (especially the Festuca ovina group) the leaf sheath forms two vertical shoulder-like protrusions at the top.

EN: (membranous) ligule FR: ligule (membraneuse) IT: ligula (membranosa)

DE: Blatthäutchen FR: ligule (membraneuse) IT: ligula (membranosa) In the true grasses (Poaceae) the term ligule refers to the collar- or tongue-shaped membrane at the junction between the leaf sheath and the leaf blade. The ligule can be seen as an extension of the inner epidermis of the leaf sheath. It hugs the stalk closely and prevents dirt and water from penetrating into the leaf sheath. In addition, the ligule protects the blade from mechanical damage that could be caused by the movement of the leaf blade in the wind.
In species with closed leaf sheaths, i.e. ones that have permanently fused, the ligule, at least initially, often takes the form of a short tube surrounding the shoot. In Melica uniflora the tubular ligule also has a greenish-white spur, from 1 to 4 mm in length, on the side facing away from the leaf blade. In this species the ligule is therefore often called antiligule.
Some species, such as Common Reed (Phragmites australis) have a fringe of hair instead of a membranous ligule and very occasionally the ligule is completely absent, e.g. in Cockspur Grass (Echinochloa crus-galli). The length and form of the ligule vary greatly from species to species: the ligule can be short or long, pointed or collar-shaped, transparent or milky white, soft and supple or rigid, bald or hairy. Also, the edge can take quite different forms: smooth, ciliate, serrated or torn. The form of the ligule is important for identification, in particular, when only non-flowering shoots are present. The form of the ligule of the 2-4 lowermost leaves is particularly relevant; the ligule of the uppermost leaves is sometimes significantly longer than in the leaves at the base.
