EN: runner, stolon, rhizom FR: stolon (aérien et souterrain) IT: stolone (ipogeo e epigeo)

DE: Ausläufe, Stolon, Rhizom FR: stolon (aérien et souterrain) IT: stolone (ipogeo e epigeo) Stolons are lateral shoots with elongated internodes which serve vegetative reproduction. At the nodes adventitious roots and green shoots may arise. The presence of nodes distinguishes stolons from true roots. Above ground runners are called stolons and below ground ones rhizomes. Stolon is often also used as a general term to refer to both kinds of runners. Furthermore it is possible to distinguish two growth forms of stolons: monopodial and sympodial. A runner is monopodial when it can produce several new tillers from its nodes. On the other hand, a runner is sympodial when it can produce only one tiller, which in turn may produce new runners. |

EN: pH soil FR: pH du sol IT: pH del suolo
In sauren Böden liegt Stickstoff z.

DE: pH Boden FR: pH du sol IT: pH del suolo
The pH value of the soil influences the (biological) availability of various macro- and micronutrients, and thus the growth of plants. In acidic soils, nitrogen, for example, is present as ammonia, whereas in alkaline soils it occurs in the form of nitrate. Due to the permeability of their root membranes, many plants can absorb nitrogen either only as nitrate or only as ammonia. When pH values are low, some ions, such as aluminium or manganese, can reach concentrations which are toxic for many plant species. Many plant species grow only on calcareous or acidic soils. Mat grass (Nardus stricta), Wavy-Hair grass (Avenella flexuosa) and Rock Bent (Agrostis rupestris) are clear indicators of acidity, while Blue Moor grass (Sesleria caerulea), Distichous oat grass (Trisetum distichophyllum) and Alpine Bent (Agrostis alpina) are clear indicators of calcareous soils. The pH value of the soil is particularly dependent on the bed rock. If the bedrock is rich in bases, as in the case of limestone, dolomite, marl or shale, base-rich and usually calcareous soils develop. If the bedrock is silicate, as in the case of granite, gneiss or sandstone, the soil that develops is acidic and poor in bases. On peat bogs the soils are also acidic, and even if the bedrock is calcareous, the rain may leach the chalk out of the topsoil over time. |

DE: Ligula FR: ligule IT: ligula
Ligule (Lat. ligula: "small tongue") refers to the tongue- or collar-shaped membrane at the junction between the sheath and the upper side of the leaf blade in the true grasses (Poaceae). The ligule can be interpreted as a prolongation of the inner epidermis of the leaf sheath. It hugs the culm closely and prevents dirt and water from penetrating into the leaf sheath. In addition, it protects the culm from injury which may be caused by movement of the leaf blade in the wind. In very few species, e.g. Cockspur Grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) the ligule is completely missing. In some species the membraneous ligule is replaced by a fringe of hair, e.g. the Common Reed (Phragmites australis), Purple Moor-grass (Molinia spp.), and Bristle-grass (Setaria spp.). |

T. einzelne sehr lange Haare. |

EN: fringe of hair (ligule) DE: Haarkranz (Ligula) FR: couronne du poils (ligule)
DE: Haarkranz, Ligula FR: couronne de poils (ligule) IT: corona di peli (ligula)
Some species, such as the Common Reed (Phragmites australis) have a fringe of hair instead of the ligule at the junction between the leaf sheath and the upper side of the leaf blade. The fringe of hair can be interpreted as a very short ligule with long cilia on the edge. It is an extension of the inner epidermis of the leaf sheath and prevents dirt and water from penetrating into the leaf sheath. It also protects the culm from mechanical damage that could be caused by movement of the leaf blade in the wind. A fringe of hair instead of a ligule is relatively rare in grasses, so it is a relatively important feature for identification. Like the ligule, the fringe of hair varies in length from species to species. In the Common Reed the relatively short fringe of hair may sometimes include some very long individual hairs. |

DE: Blatthäutchen FR: ligule (membraneuse) IT: ligula (membranosa) In the true grasses (Poaceae) the term ligule refers to the collar- or tongue-shaped membrane at the junction between the leaf sheath and the leaf blade. The ligule can be seen as an extension of the inner epidermis of the leaf sheath. It hugs the stalk closely and prevents dirt and water from penetrating into the leaf sheath. In addition, the ligule protects the blade from mechanical damage that could be caused by the movement of the leaf blade in the wind.
In species with closed leaf sheaths, i.e. ones that have permanently fused, the ligule, at least initially, often takes the form of a short tube surrounding the shoot. In Melica uniflora the tubular ligule also has a greenish-white spur, from 1 to 4 mm in length, on the side facing away from the leaf blade. In this species the ligule is therefore often called antiligule.
Some species, such as Common Reed (Phragmites australis) have a fringe of hair instead of a membranous ligule and very occasionally the ligule is completely absent, e.g. in Cockspur Grass (Echinochloa crus-galli). The length and form of the ligule vary greatly from species to species: the ligule can be short or long, pointed or collar-shaped, transparent or milky white, soft and supple or rigid, bald or hairy. Also, the edge can take quite different forms: smooth, ciliate, serrated or torn. The form of the ligule is important for identification, in particular, when only non-flowering shoots are present. The form of the ligule of the 2-4 lowermost leaves is particularly relevant; the ligule of the uppermost leaves is sometimes significantly longer than in the leaves at the base.
