Ährenspindel | rachis, spike-axis, main stem of the flower-head | Rachis, axe principal de l'inflorescence | rachide, asse centrale dell'infiorescenza |
EN: rachis FR: rachis, axe principal IT: rachide

The main axis of the inflorescence, especially in spike-like forms, is called the rachis. In the case of spike-like panicles the rachis is usually completely hidden by spikelets, as in Timothy-grass (Phleum pratense). In so-called 'secund' spike-like panicles, the axis can be seen from one side, as in Crested Dog’s-tail (Cynosurus cristatus) and Blue Moor grass (Sesleria caerulea). |

In the true grasses (Poaceae) the main axis of the inflorescence is often called the "rachis". The term rachis is used in all types of inflorescences, namely in panicles, racemes, false spikes, true spikes and subdigitate inflorescences. In true digitate inflorescences, the main axis of the inflorescence is compressed to a point, as in the case of Bermuda-grass (Cynodon dactylon). |

EN: awn FR: arête IT: resta

DE: Granne FR: arête IT: resta
Awn is the term for a 3 mm to 30 cm long, usually relatively stiff bristle, which occurs in some grass species at the top or on the back or at the base of the lemma. In some species (e.g. Hordeum murinum) the glumes are also awned. In the Awnless or Hungarian Brome (Bromus inermis) the fact that it is one of the few native Bromus species which has no or only short awns has found its way into the name. If the lemma or glume has only a very short awn, less than 2 mm long, it is called mucronate but not aristate (awned).
Of particular relevance for identification is the awn of the lemma, mainly taking the following aspects into account:
With significantly geniculate and/or very long awns a distinction is sometimes made between the lower and the upper part of the awn. With Feather-grass (Stipa pennata), for example, the lower part of the awn is helically twisted, while the upper part is feathery. It can be assumed that the awn corresponds morphologically to the leaf blade, while the associated lemma or glume corresponds to the leaf sheath.

Rhizomes are UNDER-ground prostrate or ascending shoots which serve vegetative propagation. Rhizomes are distinguished from roots e.g. by the fact that roots do not have nodes. At some of the nodes of the rhizome sterile or flowering shoots and so-called adventitious roots may develop. In marsh and aquatic plants rhizomes often contain air-filled tissues - so-called aerenchyma. |

Riefung der Blattspreite | striation | Striation du limbe foliaire (sillons et arêtes) | scanalatura della lamina fogliare |
EN: striation FR: striation du limbe foliaire IT: scanalatura della lamina fogliare

When clear ribs and furrows are visible in the the cross section of the leaf blade, it is said to be striated. In most grass species only the upper side of the leaf blade is striated, while the underside is smooth. In general the striation is regular, i.e. all the ribs are of equal height and width. In the case of Koeleria pyramidata, however, the striation of the upper side is uneven, i.e. the ribs are of different widths.
The following types of striation are distinguished on the upper side of the leaf blade:
The striation of the upper side of the leaf blade is generally considered to be a reliable trait.
In a few species the underside of the leaf blade is clearly striated. Glyceria fluitans and Glyceria notata, for instance, can be clearly identified by the combination of a clearly striated underside and a tramline on the upper side of the leaf blade. |

Ähre (echte Ähre) | spike | Epi | spiga (spiga vera) |
EN: spike FR: épi IT: spiga

DE: Ähre FR: épi IT: spiga A spike is an inflorescence where all the spikelets are sessile, that is, directly attached to the main axis (rachis). In accordance with the typical branching scheme of the Poaceae, the spikelets are usually arranged alternately and on opposite sides of the axis (distichous). In the case of Nardus, they seem to be arranged on one side only (secund): it is assumed that they rotated through 180° in the course of evolution. When the spikelets have a shorter or longer stalk (pedicel), the inflorescence is called a raceme. In general the wide side of the spikelets faces the axis (e.g. Elymus repens). In the genus Lolium, however, the narrow side faces the axis, fitting into a small indentation. In the species of this genus only one glume is retained, except for the terminal spikelet. Genesis: starting from the original panicle inflorescence, the evolution of the spikelet can be explained as follows: (1) loss of tertiary branches (→ double raceme); (2) loss of secondary branches (→ raceme); loss of primary branches (→ spike). |

DE: Ährchen FR: épillet IT: spighetta The spikelet is the basic unit of inflorescence in the grasses (Poaceae). The spikelets lie at the end of each branch of the inflorescence. The final order branch represents the axis of the spikelet (rachis). Structure of the spikelet: each spikelet includes one to several florets (one- to many-flowered). The bract is enclosed by two bracts respectively named lemma and palea. The spikelets are enclosed by a lower and upper glume. Spikelets are arranged along the main and secondary axes (rachises) into a flowering head (inflorescence). Number of florets in each spikelet: in evolutionary terms the many-flowered spikelet is considered to be the original form. In the course of evolution the original many-flowered spikelets were reduced to two-flowered or one-flowered spikelets. In many species spikelets contain not only fertile but also sterile or stunted florets usually consisting of only a lemma. E.g. native species of Melica genus usually comprise 1-2 lower fertile florets and 2-3 upper club-like sterile florets. If the lowermost floret is sterile, its lemma is often interpreted as an additional glume. Even if in certain species the number of florets may vary, it is generally stable:
