Blatt | leaf, leaf-blade | Feuille | foglia, lamina fogliare |
EN: leaf FR: feuille IT: foglia

DE: Blatt FR: feuille IT: foglia In the true grasses (Poaceae) each leaf consists of (1) the leaf sheath, (2) the leaf base (sheath junction) with the ligule and (3) the leaf blade, colloquially referred to as the leaf.
The leaves always grow individually at the nodes of new shoots or fully developed stalks. In the true grasses they are always double-rowed (secunded) and positioned alternately on opposite sides of the stalk (in the sedges they are always arranged in three rows).
The leaf sheath refers to that portion of the leaf between the node and the leaf base. The leaf sheath surrounds the shoot, while the leaf blade protrudes from it. The junction between the leaf sheath and leaf blade, which is usually also differs in colour from the rest of the leaf, is called the leaf base or the sheath junction. Colloquially the term leaf mostly refers only to the leaf blade protruding from the stalk.

Deckspelze | lemma | Glumelle extérieure, glumelle inférieure, lemme | lemma, glumetta inferiore |
EN: lemma FR: glumelle extérieure IT: lemma

In alcune specie (esempio: Melica ciliata, Achnatherum calamagrostis) i lemmi presentano in margine lungamente ciliato (4 mm). |
DE: Deckspelze FR: glumelle extérieure IT: lemma
In the context of true grasses (Poaceae) the term lemma refers to the bract (carrier or covering leaf) which is found underneath each flower. In grasses, the flowers are generally referred to as florets. In contrast to the 2-keeled, mostly inconspicuous and delicate paleas, lemmas are usually relatively coarse and also have a more or less long awn originating from the tip or the back. It is assumed that the lemma and awn are homologous to the leaf sheath and the blade respectively. Lemmas can be very diverse. In some species (e.g. Melica ciliata, Achnatherum calamagrostis) the lemmas on the lateral veins have cilia measuring up to 4 mm in length. In Setaria pumila the lemma has a cartilage-like consistency and is conspicuously cross-wrinkled. Together with the palea, the lemma envelopes three stamens and the ovary with two stigmas.
In most grass species several florets together form one partial inflorescence, known as a spikelet, which is enclosed at the base by usually 2 glumes. All the spikelets together form the total inflorescence.
Photo: The photo shows several spikelets of Silky-spike Melick (Melica ciliata). In the foreground one of the two reddish-translucent but glabrous (hairless) glumes can be seen; in the background the lemma with long cilia is visible.

Ligule (Lat. ligula: "small tongue") refers to the tongue- or collar-shaped membrane at the junction between the sheath and the upper side of the leaf blade in the true grasses (Poaceae). The ligule can be interpreted as a prolongation of the inner epidermis of the leaf sheath. It hugs the culm closely and prevents dirt and water from penetrating into the leaf sheath. In addition, it protects the culm from injury which may be caused by movement of the leaf blade in the wind. In very few species, e.g. Cockspur Grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) the ligule is completely missing. In some species the membraneous ligule is replaced by a fringe of hair, e.g. the Common Reed (Phragmites australis), Purple Moor-grass (Molinia spp.), and Bristle-grass (Setaria spp.). |

In addition, the ligule protects the blade from mechanical damage that could be caused by the movement of the leaf blade in the wind.
In species with closed leaf sheaths, i.e. ones that have permanently fused, the ligule, at least initially, often takes the form of a short tube surrounding the shoot. In Melica uniflora the tubular ligule also has a greenish-white spur, from 1 to 4 mm in length, on the side facing away from the leaf blade. In this species the ligule is therefore often called antiligule.
Some species, such as Common Reed (Phragmites australis) have a fringe of hair instead of a membranous ligule and very occasionally the ligule is completely absent, e.g. in Cockspur Grass (Echinochloa crus-galli). The length and form of the ligule vary greatly from species to species: the ligule can be short or long, pointed or collar-shaped, transparent or milky white, soft and supple or rigid, bald or hairy. Also, the edge can take quite different forms: smooth, ciliate, serrated or torn. The form of the ligule is important for identification, in particular, when only non-flowering shoots are present. The form of the ligule of the 2-4 lowermost leaves is particularly relevant; the ligule of the uppermost leaves is sometimes significantly longer than in the leaves at the base.

DE: Schwellkörper FR: glomellule IT: lodicule
Lodicules (Lodiculae) swell during flowering, forcing the lemma and palea apart to allow anthers and stigmas to be exposed to the wind.
Lodicules are considered to be two transformed elements of the inner perigon.
To allow the wind unhindered access to anthers and stigmas, in the course of evolution the anemochorous true grasses not only developed lodicules, but also radically simplified the remainder of the floret: from the original 15 elements, only 9 remain today in most cases.
Photo: The photo shows two spikelets of False Oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius), each consisting of two florets. The lodicules cannot be seen on the photo. They are located between the stamens and the lemma. In False Oat-grass, each spikelet contains a male and a hermaphrodite floret. The lemma of the male floret is awned, that of the hermaphrodie floret unawned. The two transparent leaves in the centre of the florets are the paleas. The stamens with their violet anthers and feathery-white stigmas can be clearly seen. |
