EN: glume FR: glume IT: gluma

Glumes are located at the very bottom of each spikelet. Normally there are two glumes on each spikelet, a lower and an upper one. In the Lolium species most spikelets have only one glume, as they are positioned with the narrow side directly adjacent to the main axis of the inflorescence (= rachis); in this species only the top spikelet at the top of the inflorescence has two glumes. In some Phleum and Alopecurus species both glumes are fused together at the base.

In alcune specie (esempio: Melica ciliata, Achnatherum calamagrostis) i lemmi presentano in margine lungamente ciliato (4 mm). |
DE: Deckspelze FR: glumelle extérieure IT: lemma
In the context of true grasses (Poaceae) the term lemma refers to the bract (carrier or covering leaf) which is found underneath each flower. In grasses, the flowers are generally referred to as florets. In contrast to the 2-keeled, mostly inconspicuous and delicate paleas, lemmas are usually relatively coarse and also have a more or less long awn originating from the tip or the back. It is assumed that the lemma and awn are homologous to the leaf sheath and the blade respectively. Lemmas can be very diverse. In some species (e.g. Melica ciliata, Achnatherum calamagrostis) the lemmas on the lateral veins have cilia measuring up to 4 mm in length. In Setaria pumila the lemma has a cartilage-like consistency and is conspicuously cross-wrinkled. Together with the palea, the lemma envelopes three stamens and the ovary with two stigmas.
In most grass species several florets together form one partial inflorescence, known as a spikelet, which is enclosed at the base by usually 2 glumes. All the spikelets together form the total inflorescence.
Photo: The photo shows several spikelets of Silky-spike Melick (Melica ciliata). In the foreground one of the two reddish-translucent but glabrous (hairless) glumes can be seen; in the background the lemma with long cilia is visible.

Foto: Das Foto zeigt zwei Ährchen vom Nickenden Perlgras (Melica nutans).

Scales in the true grasses refer to all the leaf-like elements in the inflorescence. We distinguish between the glume, lemma and palea. Photo: The photo shows two spikelets of Nodding Melick (Melica nutans). The two glumes of the spikelet are burgundy red scales, whlle the lemmas of the two fertile florets are green. In the lower left-hand floret the whitish-green palea can be seen, which is slightly shorter than the lemma. The white club-like structure in the middle of the spikelet is a stunted, sterile floret.
Glume: The glumes are located at the base of the spikelet and enclose it. They are usually awnless (exceptions: e.g. some Phleum species and Hordeum murinum).
Lemmas: Lemmas in the true grasses (Poaceae) refer to the bract of each floret. In many grass species the lemmas are awned, meaning that they bear a bristly arista, 3 mm to 30 cm long, originating at the tip or on the back of the lemma. Palea: In each floret a double-keeled palea originates opposite and slightly above the one-keeled lemma. The lemma and palea together enclose the stamens and the ovaries. |

EN: main stem of the flower-head DE: Spindel FR: axe principal de l'inflorescence

In the true grasses (Poaceae) the main axis of the inflorescence is often called the "rachis". The term rachis is used in all types of inflorescences, namely in panicles, racemes, false spikes, true spikes and subdigitate inflorescences. In true digitate inflorescences, the main axis of the inflorescence is compressed to a point, as in the case of Bermuda-grass (Cynodon dactylon). |

DE: Ährenspindel FR: rachis, axe principal IT: rachide
The main axis of the inflorescence, especially in spike-like forms, is called the rachis. In the case of spike-like panicles the rachis is usually completely hidden by spikelets, as in Timothy-grass (Phleum pratense). In so-called 'secund' spike-like panicles, the axis can be seen from one side, as in Crested Dog’s-tail (Cynosurus cristatus) and Blue Moor grass (Sesleria caerulea). |

EN: sessile crateriform glands DE: Sitzdrüsen FR: glandes sessiles

DE: Sitzdrüsen FR: glandes sessiles IT: ghiandole sessili
Sessile crateriform glands are very short glandular hairs. Glandular hairs exude secretions and therefore often have small, shiny and often sticky globular drops at their tip. Among the native grasses this trait is very rare, even though it is not uncommon in other plants. Small Love-grass (Eragrostis minor) is one of the few grasses in which the edges of the leaf blade are regularly studded with conspicuous sessile crateriform glands. |

If the edge of the leaf blade is conspicuously whitish and cartilaginous, it is referred to as "hyaline" (from the Latin hyalinus = glass-like, translucent). Hyaline leaf margins are found particularly in species with relatively coarse leaf blades, e.g. Sesleria caerulea or Helictotrichon versicolor. Hyaline leaf edges consist of hyaline cells, that is, of dead cells that do not contain chlorophyll and are therefore translucent. |

Hooded or boat-shaped tip refers to the short, three-dimensional tip, reminiscent of a ship's bow or a hood, which is typical for linear, parallel-edged, abruptly pointed leaf blades. Hooded tips are found in all types of linear leaf blades, e.g. in many - but not all - Poa species as well as in Sesleria caerulea and Helictotrichon pubescens. |
