Fingerähre (echte Fingerähre, Ährentraube) | digitate inflorescence, digitate spike | Inflorescence à épis digités | infiorescenza digitata |
EN: digitate inflorescence FR: inflorescence à épis digités IT: infiorescenza digitata

DE: Fingerähre (echte Fingerähre, Ährentraube) FR: inflorescence à épis digités IT: infiorescenza digitata
Digitate and subdigitate inflorescences are terms for so-called compound inflorescences consisting of several, more or less similar spike-like branches. In true digitate inflorescences ALL these inflorescence branches start from ONE point of the flowering stalk (e.g. Cynodon dactylon), while in the subdigitate inflorescences they start from SEPARATE points on the stalk (e.g. Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria sanguinalis). In small specimens the starting points of the spike-like branches may be very close together, even in subdigitate inflorescences.
The development of true digitate inflorescences can be thought of as follows: (1) elimination (reduction) of the side branches of the 3rd order → double raceme (2) shortening (contraction) of the side branches of the 2nd order → subdigitate inflorescence, and (3) compression (condensation) of the main axis → true digitate inflorescence.

Blütenstand (Gesamtinfloreszenz, Infloreszenz) | inflorescence, flower-head | Inflorescence | infiorescenza |
EN: inflorescence FR: inflorescence IT: infiorescenza

DE: Blütenstand FR: inflorescence IT: infiorescenza Inflorescence (total inflorescence) in grasses consists of many partial inflorescences or spikelets, which may be arranged quite differently. In general, the richly branched, loose panicle is considered as being the original inflorescence type in grasses, from which - through omission and/or shortening of lateral branches - the other types of inflorescence are derived.
In the literature, the following types of inflorescence are distinguished:
In grasses there are many transitional forms between the types of inflorescence described above, as well as numerous other modifications. Clear assignment of an individual grass species to a given inflorescence type is often not possible. For this reason, the inflorescence types described above are often grouped into the following main types for practical purposes, but even then allocation is frequently a matter of judgment:

F, R, N and S are the soil indicator values for Germany according to Ellenberg et al. (2001). Given typical competition pressure, the soil indicator values characterize the soil conditions under which a species is most frequently found. The data are valid for Western Central Europe, in particular West Germany, including the adjacent Alps. In general, soil indicator values are not based on in-situ measurements but rather on experience or on data from the literature.
Moisture F (12-level scale, from 1 to 12): characterizes the distribution along a gradient of the mean soil moisture conditions during the vegetation period. 1: Indicator of extreme dryness, restricted to soils that often dry out for some time 3: Dry-site indicator, more often found on dry ground than in moist places 5: Moist-site indicator, mainly on fresh soils of average dampness 7: Dampness indicator, mainly on constantly moist or damp, but not on wet soils 9: Wet-site indicator, often on water-saturated, poorly aerated soils 10: Indicator of shallow-water sites that may lack standing water for extensive periods 11: Plant rooting under water, but at least for a time exposed above, or plant floating on the surface 12: Submerged plant, permanently or almost constantly under water ~: Indicator of pronounced moisture variability =: Indicator of flooding
Reaction R (9-level scale from 1 to 9): characterizes the distribution along a gradient of the content of free H-ions in the soil and lime, respectively. 1: Indicator of extreme acidity, never found on weakly acid or alkaline soils 3: Acidity indicator, mainly on acid soils, but exceptionally also on nearly neutral ones 5: Indicator of moderately acid soils, only occasionally found on very acid or on neutral to alkaline soils 7: Indicator of weakly acid to weakly alkaline conditions, never found on very acid soils 9: Indicator of alkaline reaction, always found on calcareous or other high-pH soils
Nitrogen N (9-level scale from 1 to 9): characterizes the distribution along a gradient of plant-available nitrogen during the vegetation period. 1: Indicator of extremely infertile sites 3: Indicator of more or less infertile sites 5: Indicator of sites of intermediate fertility 7: Plant often found in richly fertile places 9: Indicator of extremely rich sites, such as cattle resting places or near polluted rivers
Salt S (10-level scale from 0 to 9): characterizes the distribution along a gradient of the salt content, especially the Cl- concentration, in the rooting zone. 0: Non-salt-tolerant species, absent from saline sites; if in coastal situations, only accidental and non-persistent if subjected to saline spray or water 1: Slightly salt-tolerant species (0-0.1% Cl-), rare to occasional on saline soils but capable of persisting in the presence of salt – includes dune and dune-slack species where the ground water is fresh but where some exposure to salt spray is likely 3: Beta-mesohaline species (0.3-0.5% Cl-), most common in coastal sites but regularly present in freshwater or on non-saline soils inland (includes strictly coastal species occurring in sites such as cliff crevices and sand dunes that are not obviously salt-affected 5: Alpha-mesohaline species (0.7-0.9% Cl-), typical of the upper edge of saltmarshes, where not inundated by all tides - includes obligate halophytes of cliffs regularly exposed to salt spray 7: Polyhaline species (1.2-1.6% Cl-), typical of lower saltmarsh 9: Euhaline to hypersaline species (>2.3% Cl-), growing under extremely saline conditions, especially during periods of drought, in sites where sea water evaporates, precipitating salt

F, W, R, N, H and D are the soil indicator values according to Landolt et al. (2010). Given typical competition pressure, the soil indicator values characterize the soil conditions under which a species is most frequently found. Of course, there are substantial interactions among the different soil indicator values. For instance, a high moisture value is usually associated with a high amount of plant-available nutrients, a high humus value with poor soil aeration, and a low reaction value with a low nutrient value. In general, soil indicator values were assigned based on experience or on data from the literature.
Moisture F (9-level scale, from 1 to 5): characterizes the mean soil moisture conditions during the vegetation period. 1: very dry 1.5: dry 2: moderately dry 2.5: fresh 3: moderately moist 3.5: moist 4:very moist 4.5: wet 5: flooded, submerged ^: in contact with flowing water

Nutrients N (5-level scale, from 1 to 5): characterizes the nutrient content in the soil, referring mostly to nitrogen and often also to phosphorus. 1: very infertile, nutrient-poor 2: infertile 3: moderately infertile to moderately fertile 4: fertile 5: very fertile, over-rich in nutrients, over-fertilized
Humus H (3-level scale, from 1 to 5): characterises the humus content, i.e. the totality of dead organic material in or on the soil. 1: little or no humus, on raw soil 3: moderate humus content, mostly in the form of mull 5: high humus content, mostly as raw humus, moder or peat

DE: Zeigerwerte Klima für Deutschland FR: Valeurs écologiques du climat pour l'Allemagne IT: indici ecologici del clima per la Germania L, T and K are the climate indicator values for Germany according to Ellenberg et al. (2001). The values describe the climatic conditions at the sites where a species is found most frequently under conditions of typical competition. The data are valid for Western Central Europe, in particular Western Germany, including the adjacent Alps. In general, the values are not based on in-situ measurements but rather on experience or on data from the literature. Light L (9-level scale, from 1 to 9): The light value describes the average amount of light available when the deciduous species are in full leaf, i.e. between about July and September, and when the sky is uniformly overcast, i.e. under diffuse radiation, in the habitats where the species in question is found most frequently. 1: Deep shade plant, even in places with less than 1% relative illumination and seldom more than 30% relative illumination, when trees are in full leaf 3: Shade plant, mostly with less than 5% relative illumination, occasionally also in better-lit places 5: Partial-shade plant, rarely in full light, but generally with more than 10% relative illumination, when trees are in leaf 7: Partial-light plant, generally in well-lit places, also occurring in partial shade but never in places with less than 30% relative illumination (when trees are in full leaf) 9: Full light plant, found mostly in full sunlight, never in places with less than 50% relative illumination (): Values in parentheses refer to seedlings and saplings of trees and shrubs in the forest.
Temperature T (9-level scale, from 1 to 9): The temperature value characterizes the distribution on the altitudinal or temperature gradient (average air temperature during the growing period), from the nival zone to the warmest locations in the lowlands. The T-values were assigned based on the altitudinal distribution of the species in central Europa as shown by the relevant distribution maps. 1: plant growing on extremely cold sites, found only in the alpine and nival zones, i.e. between the timberline and the snowline 3: plant growing on cold sites, found primarily in the subalpine zone 5: plant growing on moderately warm sites, found primarily in the submontane temperate zone but occasionally also in the lowlands and the upper montane zone 7: plant growing on warm sites; in northern parts of Central Europe only in the relatively warm lowlands 9: plant growing on the warmest locations only; mainly in the Mediterranean, but with some populations in very warm locations in the southern parts of Central Europe
Continentality K (9-level scale, from 1 to 9): The continentality value characterises the occurrence of a species on the continentality gradient from the Atlantic coast to Inner Eurasia, in particular with regard to the seasonal and daily changes in temperature, and based primarily on the biogeographical data provided by Rothmaler's Exkursionsflora. 1: eu-oceanic, in Central Europe present only in a few outposts with eu-oceanic conditions 2: oceanic, primarily in Western Europe and in the western parts of Central Europe 4: sub-oceanic, primarily in Central Europe and in some eastern outposts 6: sub-continental, primarily in the eastern parts of Central Europe and in Eastern Europe 8: continental, primarily in Eastern Europe; in Central Europe only in a few outposts with continental conditions 9: eu-continental, primarily in Eastern Europe and in some outposts in the eastern parts of Central Europe; missing in the western parts of Central Europe as well as in Western Europe

L, T and K are the climate indicator values according to Landolt et al. (2010). The values describe the climatic conditions at the sites where a species is found most frequently under conditions of typical competition. Because there are only few relative light measurements in situ, the values are based on experience.
Light L (5-level scale, from 1 to 5): The light value describes the average amount of light available to a species in the habitats where it is found most frequently. Values for trees and shrubs refer to the shade tolerance of seedlings and saplings. 1: deep shade, plant tolerates even less than 3 % of relative illumination 2: shade, plant tolerates less than 10 % of relative illumination; in rare cases it may tolerate less than 3 % 3: semi-shade: plant rarely tolerates below 10% of relative illumination 4: well lit places, plant tolerates slight shade only occasionally or for 5: full light, plant grows only in open and sunny places
Temperature T (9-level scale, from 1 to 5): The temperature value characterises the average air temperature during the growth period of a plant. It largely corresponds with the average altitudinal distribution of species along the Alpine Arc. 1: alpine and nival; from the timberline to the snowline 1.5: lower alpine, supra-subalpine and upper subalpine; larch and stone pine forests (Larix decidua and Pinus cembra) 2: subalpine; beech-free spruce forests (Picea excelsa without Fagus sylvatica) 2.5: lower subalpine and upper montane 3: montane; beech and silver fir forests (Fagus sylvatica and Abies alba); in the central Alps: Scotch pine forests (Pinus sylvestris) 3.5: lower montane and upper colline 4: colline; deciduous mixed forests with oaks 4.5: warm sites, colline 5: very warm sites, colline; only the warmest sites, typical for southern Europe
Continentality K (5-level scale, from 1 to 5): The continentality value characterises the occurrence of a species with respect to the continentality of the climate, i.e., solar radiation, winter temperatures and air humidity. 1: oceanic; very high relative air humidity; very small daily and annual variation in temperature, relatively mild winters 2: suboceanic; high relative air humidity; small daily and annual variation in temperature, rather mild winters 3: suboceanic to subcontinental; medium relative air humidity; moderate daily and annual variation of temperature; medium winter temperatures 4: subcontinental; low relative air humidity; large daily and annual variation of temperature; rather cool winters 5: continental; very low relative air humidity; very large daily and annual variation in temperature; relatively cold winters

If the edge of the leaf blade is conspicuously whitish and cartilaginous, it is referred to as "hyaline" (from the Latin hyalinus = glass-like, translucent). Hyaline leaf margins are found particularly in species with relatively coarse leaf blades, e.g. Sesleria caerulea or Helictotrichon versicolor. Hyaline leaf edges consist of hyaline cells, that is, of dead cells that do not contain chlorophyll and are therefore translucent. |

Blattscheide, Scheide | sheath, leaf-sheath | Gaine, gaine foliaire | guaina, guaina fogliare |
EN: leaf-sheath FR: gaine foliaire IT: guaina fogliare
EN: leaf-sheath DE: Blattscheide IT: guaina fogliare

Infine, in alcune specie (es. |
DE: Blattscheide, Scheide FR: gaine foliaire IT: guaina fogliare The leaf sheath or sheath is the term for the part of the leaf which surrounds the stalk, while the leaf blade itself protrudes from the shoot. The leaf consists of the leaf blade and the leaf sheath.
The leaf sheaths, especially the lowermost ones, are an important feature for identification. In almost all grasses the leaf sheath is open along its entire length. In relatively few species - e.g. Bromus, Glyceria, Helictotrichon, Melica, Sesleria - it remains permanently fused over almost its entire length. In some species (e.g. Poa spp., Dactylis glomerata), the sheath is initially fused by a thin membrane, but this soon tears open as the stalk develops. Often leaf sheaths - particularly the lowermost ones - are conspicuously coloured (e.g. purple veins on a white ground in Holcus lanatus, bright red-purple in Lolium multiflorum) or strikingly hairy on the surface (Trisetum flavescens, Bromus erectus) or also only on the edges (Achnatherum calamagrostis, Setaria viridis).
In a few species the leaf sheaths have cross-veins, i.e. dark lateral connections between the longitudinal veins that are clearly visible in transmitted light (e.g. in Phalaris arundinacea, Festuca arundinacea, Glyceria fluitans). In some species the sheaths of the uppermost leaves are conspicuously inflated (e.g. Phleum spp.). In most species, however, the sheaths fit closely around the stalk even in the uppermost leaves.
Usually the basal leaf sheaths disappear quickly. In tuft-forming species they may remain for a longer time, in which case either a straw tunic or a fibre tuft is formed. If the basal leaf sheaths weather with hardly any disintegration a straw tunic forms e.g. in Poa alpina. Where only the veins remain, a dense fibre tuft develops, as in Koeleria vallesiana.
In the cross section, the sheaths are more or less round in most grass species. Some grasses have sheaths that are noticeably flattened (e.g. Dactylis glomerata) - at least as long as the stalk is not yet fully developed. Flattened leaf sheaths are found particularly - but not exclusively - in species with a folded vernation (the youngest leaf is folded instead of inrolled). In some species the leaf sheath is conspicuously keeled, and Melica nutans has a winged keel, i.e. the keel has a projecting strip of skin.
In some Festuca species (especially the Festuca ovina group) the leaf sheath forms two vertical shoulder-like protrusions at the top.

Glumes are located at the very bottom of each spikelet. Normally there are two glumes on each spikelet, a lower and an upper one. In the Lolium species most spikelets have only one glume, as they are positioned with the narrow side directly adjacent to the main axis of the inflorescence (= rachis); in this species only the top spikelet at the top of the inflorescence has two glumes. In some Phleum and Alopecurus species both glumes are fused together at the base.
