Compact tussocks occur when side shoots develop immediately adjacent to the main shoot. Particularly dense and solid tussocks are formed when the side shoots develop INSIDE the lowest leaf sheaths of the main shoot, i.e. intravaginally. In general, the tussocks are more or less round. If new side shoots are formed on only one side of the tussock, as with Mat grass (Nardus stricta), elongated board-shaped tussocks develop. |

Haarkranz, Ligula | fringe of hair, ring of hair, ligule | Couronne de poils, ligule de poils | frangia (corona) di peli, ligula di peli |
EN: fringe of hair (ligule) FR: couronne de poils (ligule) IT: corona di peli (ligula)

Some species, such as the Common Reed (Phragmites australis) have a fringe of hair instead of the ligule at the junction between the leaf sheath and the upper side of the leaf blade. The fringe of hair can be interpreted as a very short ligule with long cilia on the edge. It is an extension of the inner epidermis of the leaf sheath and prevents dirt and water from penetrating into the leaf sheath. It also protects the culm from mechanical damage that could be caused by movement of the leaf blade in the wind. A fringe of hair instead of a ligule is relatively rare in grasses, so it is a relatively important feature for identification. Like the ligule, the fringe of hair varies in length from species to species. In the Common Reed the relatively short fringe of hair may sometimes include some very long individual hairs. |

While the mucro is usually only 1 mm long, the awn measures at least 3 mm, and is often much longer. With Feather-grass (Stipa pennata) the lemmas have feathery white awns up to 30 cm long. In contrast to the mucros, which originate at the tip of the lemma or glume, real awns can also originate on the back or at the base of the lemma. Photo: The photo shows a spikelet of Soft Brome (Bromus hordeaceus). The two glumes at the base of the spikelet are mucronate, while all the lemmas have long awns. |

EN: awn FR: arête IT: resta

DE: Granne FR: arête IT: resta
Awn is the term for a 3 mm to 30 cm long, usually relatively stiff bristle, which occurs in some grass species at the top or on the back or at the base of the lemma. In some species (e.g. Hordeum murinum) the glumes are also awned. In the Awnless or Hungarian Brome (Bromus inermis) the fact that it is one of the few native Bromus species which has no or only short awns has found its way into the name. If the lemma or glume has only a very short awn, less than 2 mm long, it is called mucronate but not aristate (awned).
Of particular relevance for identification is the awn of the lemma, mainly taking the following aspects into account:
With significantly geniculate and/or very long awns a distinction is sometimes made between the lower and the upper part of the awn. With Feather-grass (Stipa pennata), for example, the lower part of the awn is helically twisted, while the upper part is feathery. It can be assumed that the awn corresponds morphologically to the leaf blade, while the associated lemma or glume corresponds to the leaf sheath.

EN: glossiness on the leaf underside FR: brillance de la face inférieure du limbe foliaire IT: lucidità della lamina fogliare inferiore

The leaf blades of most grass species are matt on both the top and the bottom (or have a semi-matt silky sheen). Relatively few species, e.g. Lolium perenne, Festuca pratensis and Festuca gigantea have leaf blades that are conspicuously glossy on the underside. Such shininess on the underside of leaf blades greatly facilitates identification. In fertilised meadows Italian Rye-grass (Lolium multiflorum) can be recognised from a distance by its loose, shiny tufts. In general, the glossiness on the underside of the leaf blade is a stable trait. In Rough Meadow-grass (Poa trivialis) the shininess is only reliably pronounced on the lower leaves, while the upper stalk leaves are often semi-matt or matt on both sides.

Gitternerven | cross-veins, reticulate veins | Nervation réticulée, nervures transversales | nervatura reticolata |
EN: cross-veins FR: nervation réticulée IT: nervatura reticolata

|
DE: Gitternerven FR: nervation réticulée IT: nervatura reticolata
The term cross veins is used to describe clearly visible interconnections between the longitudinal veins in the leaf sheath and/or the lamina. While cross veins are relatively common in sedges (Cyparaceae), they are limited to a few species of true grasses (e.g. Glyceria fluitans, Phalaris arundinacea, Phragmites australis). The cross veins can be particularly easily seen in backlight, i.e. if the leaf sheath is removed and held against the sun. With Phragmites australis the term cross ribs is preferred to cross veins, because the veins protrude from the surface of the leaf sheath. |
